What is the difference between having something tailored and having something altered?

Tailoring refers to creating a garment that is custom-fitted for and to the wearer and their unique body shape & size. Multiple areas of the piece are changed to get that perfect fit!

Alterations are less extensive, also changing the way the garment fits, however they are usually focused on one particular fit area. It could be as simple as taking up the hem on a pair of pants or shortening a sleeve.

Tailoring is usually more costly than having alterations done, but is absolutely worth it because of the huge difference it makes in the look and fit of your clothes, which ultimately makes a difference in how you feel about your look... or your whole day!! 

Tailoring & Alterations

Our bridal alteration services provide meticulous, custom fittings and expert craftsmanship to ensure your gown looks exactly as you envision it and feels perfect on your wedding day. We specialize in reshaping, hemming, bust and waist adjustments, bustle creation, strap and sleeve alterations, corsetry and structural support, as well as delicate repairs on lace, beading, and trims.

Each gown receives personalized attention from experienced sewists who respect fabric integrity and design intent, offering thoughtful solutions for comfort, mobility, and silhouette enhancement. We also offer consultations for redesigning or repurposing bridal garments (see next section, below and to the left!) and on-site emergency services when last-minute fixes are needed.

Bridal

Turn “something old” into something boldly new. Our bridal gown redesign takes a mother’s or grandmother’s wedding dress—or any cherished pre-owned gown—and remixes it into a one-of-a-kind look made for your ceremony, afterparty, or rehearsal dinner.

We keep the parts you love (beads, lace, heirloom hems) and give the rest a fresh life: think sleeker silhouettes, modern necklines, sleeves reshaped or removed, and surprise fabric inserts or playful embellishments. The goal is a piece that carries family history but feels totally you—comfortable, perfectly fitted, and styled for the vibe of your celebration.

Bridal Redesigns

Very early in her career, Mildred began to be known as “The Fixer”, not just because of her ability to repair things like zippers and torn seams, rather mostly for her passion for undoing the mistakes made on her client’s pieces by other seamstresses - and boy, oh boy, has she seen some poor workmanship, and her ability to make it like the garment was never even mishandled.

Before you get rid of it, bring it in to the studio and see if we can’t fix it for you!

Repairs

Sustainability is a thing, you know, and we are all about it. At Mildred’s, we redesign and repurpose everyday clothing you love but feel ready to refresh and renew, transforming worn, ill-fitting, or dated pieces into garments you'll reach for again—whether that means adjusting fit, shortening or lengthening hems, replacing collars or closures, adding new sleeves or pockets, updating details with trims and embroidery, or combining multiple items into a single redesigned piece!

Our team of creatives are more than just sewists. We are artisans, and we work with you, and your garments and ideas, to preserve what you cherish while improving comfort, function, and style; we prioritize sustainable choices and clear communication about options, timelines, and costs so the result feels personal, practical, and made to last!

**Rush/Expedited Fee
Depending on how quickly you need the garment(s) finished and type of project, anywhere from 25% to 50% added to regular cost of job.
THIS APPLIES TO ANY PROJECT THAT IS REQUESTED IN LESS THAN THE REGULAR TURN AROUND TIMELINE OF 21 DAYS. No exceptions.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
Standard alterations (pant or dress/skirt hem, waist darts, etc) should not require more than one fitting.​ More elaborate alterations (all bridal, ie. any bodice work or redesigns, suit jacket tailoring, etc)

  • Any project with a cost over $200 requires a non-refundable deposit of 50% (of the total amount of the job proposal) to be remitted BEFORE work will commenced. The balance is due upon receipt of completed project and/or a ready to wear garment.

  • Fees for service are payable by CASH, CHECK (upon approval) or ZELLE. Mildred cannot take credit cards and no longer accepts VENMO.

  • CUSTOM DESIGNED PIECES ARE PRICED ACCORDING TO THE ENTIRETY OF THE PROJECT.

  • All costs take into consideration variables like quality of original garment and it’s materials (for alterations), and the quality of selections and specifications put forth and made by the client (for custom garments).

  • Mildred and any affiliates are not responsible for the poor construction put forth or cut rate fabrics/materials used by any clothing brand that crosses the sewing table.

    *BRIDES! PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:
    Pricing for alterations includes the cost of the INITIAL FITTING, as well as a FINAL FITTING.

  • Standard BRIDAL GOWN alterations will normally add $750 to the cost of the dress, so before you say "YES" to that dress, make sure you have included at least that much in your budget!

  • BRIDES, please expect to leave a $375 deposit with Mildred when you drop off your dress. Details will be discussed during your consultation.

  • All pricing listed herein is a starting place, and does not include adjustments for things like expediting a job, working with silks, beading or sequined fabrics, or any other "out of the ordinary" requests or needs

  • There is an initial cost of $25 to book your fitting online, which is applied to the final total for your project, ultimately making your initial fitting or consultation FREE.
    As of October 1, 2025, and for the time being, Mildred DOES NOT have online booking options available. Please call or text 610.751.4587 to book a fit or consultation.

  • Any additional fittings, for example in the case that you would change your mind about your wants or needs once work has begun, would be subject to an additional fee.

  • Additional fitting fees start at $25 per.
